This is by no means a complete list of programs that one needs. But, it's a good place to start.
Ultra Edit 5.0a(16 bit) The best text editor out there. Comes with American dictionary.

VuePrint 7.5 An incredible image viewing program. Works with movies, jpgs, gifs, bmps...
Photodex's Compupic. Very nice image viewer, opens everything.

WinZip 6.2 (16 bit) I shouldn't even need to put this here. Download it. You will need it to uncompress any files downloaded from the internet.
WinZip 7.0 (32 bit)

Cute FTP (16 bit) A good FTP program. Large layout, easy to see

WS_FTP (16 bit) But I like this better.
WS_FTP LE (32 bit)

And this is the one I use. It's like WS_FTP, only better!

Paint Shop Pro 3.11 (16 bit) A good paint program. Takes a while to download though.
Paint Shop Pro 5.03 (32 bit)

WebCelerator Never tried it. Sombody wanted me to put it up.

PuTTY Secure Telnet and SSH program.
