Presidential Candidates and the Discussion of Family

Introduction

Having now developed your own platform on family issues, your group will be assigned two or three presidential candidates. For each candidate, you should read through their web page and identity all positions that fall within the rubric of family politics and policy. You will compare your platform to each of the two candidates, with the goal of either endorsing or declining to endorse the candidate.

Questions

Please answer the following questions in realtion to your candidate:

1) Does each candidate share the same basic values that your group has defined as central for family policy?

2) How do the candidates' policy proposals compare to those of your group?

3) Does either candidate propose policies that you have not considered, but that you would like to add to your platform?

Specific Assignment

I would like for you to present your platform. Each group has 15 minutes to make present their platform. It would be helpful for you to create a visual aid for your platform. You could do this either by creating a powerpoint document, outlining your main points in a word document, or putting your main idea on a poster. In your discussion, note how different authors have influenced your platform and/or how different authors would respond to your platform. Note whether you feel your platform has much chance of being politically successful. Please be sure that all group members are involved in your presentation and able to answer questions. After your presentation, you should take 5 minutes to discuss each of your presidential candidates. As you discuss your candidate, please answer the questions above. In addition, if there were disagreements about the candidates in your group, please be sure to note them. Are your disagreements about the candidates connected to disagreements that came through in your discusssions? Were there patterns to your disagreements and how might you account for or explain those disagreements?
