Deliberation Assignment

From 10/27-12/9 our class timne will be spent discussing the research that you are doing through a series of deliberations. You will continue to work on your research and contribute to deliberations about others' research after doing a reading on their topic . There are two roles in this assignment: leader and reader/discussant. If you are not involved in one of these roles, you will need to listen to the deliberation and be prepared to comment on the deliberation and/or ask questions of participants.

If you are a leader, the group will be discussing your topic. Your job is to assign essays to those who will be discussing your topic, prepare a two page paper in which you tell me why you have chosen these particular essays and why you think they will lead to a fruitful and informative deliberation, provide copies of the essays to the discussants and to me, lead the discussion, and write a response to the discussion in which you discuss how things went and what changes you might have made to the readings or to questions that you asked to prompt discussion.. Through your assignments and your direction of the deliberation, you will be creating a living literature review.

If you are a reader, your job is to read your assigned essay carefully and represent the ideas from it in your group deliberation. You should consider both the author(s)'s argument and methodology. After you feel that you have presented the ideas, you may also criticize them, but don't criticize them until you have explained them to those of us who have not read the essay.
