Gender and society
Discussion Chapters 41, 42, 43, 44
What we learned from the readings of these chapters was:
- Tolerance of: sexist language, sexist acts, sexual violence, male
dominated environments, individual vs. group.
- Individuals do not necessarily represent the group
- Peer pressure influences people in drastic ways
- Double standards between men and women
- Men are stereotyped as the “stud” and women are stereotyped as
the “slut”
- Hate rape is directed towards minorities and are manipulated (images of
Asian women that portray them selves very passively.
Kaufman states:
- Kaufman separates their masculinity from the biology
- Men use violence because their masculinity is fragile and needs to the
be proven in order for them to accepted in society
Masculinity vs. Feminists:
- Men will put down other men so they look “cooler” to the group.
- Males are expected to be violent by other males.
- Men are expected to be: football players, hockey players, boxers
anything other then the weakest link to a group.
- Males have to work to prove themselves before other men will accept
them as a true man.
Froid:
- production of mothering
- boys feel that they need to detach from their mother in order for them
to prove their masculinity and to get away from the feminist
- men basically need to prove that they are not women and do not have any
women characteristics
- it makes more sense for women to become more masculine then it makes
sense for a men to become more feminine
- Men are taught to suppress their feelings and emotions.
- Men are not allowed to cry, because if a man cries in public then
society takes it upon them to criticize and humiliate that man for expressing
his feelings.
- Where as girls are encouraged to express there emotions
Essay 44 (Pharr):
- women feel safer when a man is around
- girls come to university and colleges so they can find a husband
- homosexual s are still scene as abusers to children and that is why
homosexuals are not allowed to adopt children or be poster parents
Refer to pg 505: “thinking about environments anti gay and lesbian …”
Refer to pg 504: “how is language used. What does it mean to say someone
is
feminist and is this positive or negative feeling? …”
Questions to think about:
1) Are there places on campus that are determined as high risk and low
risk places or in canton?
2) What characteristics do these high risk and low risk places have?
3) What three things would you change on campus to make the campus a
better place?
4) Are the programs and actions taken by the school helping or not?
Positive things about our campus:
- men against sexual violence
- speaker for orientation
- advocates
- football orientation
- blue lights on campus
- women’s action groups
- CAVA (citizens against violent acts)
- Take back nights/close line projects
- Night owls
*** All of the above are student lead programs that have been created by
students ***
Proposals:
- advertise what we have
- orientation: needs to be serious and we need people who can relate to
our age group
- Dean Petty and administration: walking away from the issues
- we need to stop covering things up and start cleaning things up
- posters: need to be effective
- peers education peers: relatable
- We need to continue education everyone throughout our four years. Not
just freshman
High risk places on campus:
- we need to have equal number of male to female ratio
- change the environments at the party, have more couches and chairs
- Talk to your parents and trusties about sexual violence, some parents
don’t think that sexual violence happens because it didn’t happen
when they
went to school.
