OPENING DAY INTRO TO CELL BIOLOGY RETURN to the Cell Biology page Handouts - I do all the work"
Syllabus - no specific reading list given; use the new inventions called Table of Contents and Index, I don't lecture from the book, it's another reference.
Note taking - I encourage you to bring a tape recorder. If you are concentrating on writing down my every word then you are not listening to me, but mostly to my words. Take topical outline notes and listen to me. Fill in the notes later from your tape.
My slides - when I use slides, you may view them outside of class with my permission. Do not remove or re-order my slides. Eventually I'll have many of them on the webpage. Many cannot be put there due to copyright issues.
My tests - are actually quizzies so easy that I'm ashamed to give them. Ten definitions and 5 - 10 point essays to give 50 - 70 points for each quiz. You get half a page for 5 point questions and a full page for 10 point questions. Do not write on the back of the pages. You should know the material well enough to give an organized, concise answer in the space provided. Write legibly (not microscopically) because if I can't read it, it is marked wrong.
Scientific writing - succinct
Abstracts, citation format, plagiarism - see "Writing an Abstract for T. Budd"
Literature review - major part of the course - see "Literature Review"
Grading, scale - >90 % = 4.0, > 85 % = 3.5, >80 % = 3.0, etc.
Attendance - your responsibility to learn.
Labs - I do not let you make up labs that you miss so don't miss any.
Safety
Intro & wrap-up - at end or extra?My library
Literature searching - lab computer, know how to do it.
I expect you to study 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour that your with me. If you don't do that, don't expect a 4.0.
