Arts Square is an important cultural center in modern day Petersburg. Many luxurious structures ring the square and the surrounding area, including the Mikhailovsky Castle, Engineer's Castle, and the Mikhail Palace. These two structures are similar in respect to other important buildings in Petersburg in that they originated as the personal homes of the aristocracy and imperial family, and were later given assorted functions to serve the Soviet state. The Engineer's Castle went from a tsar's "home" to a school for the military in Tsarist times and gradually evolved into an archival center for the Navy under the Soviet regime. The Mikhail Palace was the personal home for Grand Duke Mikhail and later became the State Museum of Russian Art or simply the Russian Museum. Both buildings have their own unique style and history, and loom large in the history of Petersburg.
