THE MILITARY CAREER OF ABRAHAM
Abraham, in 1919, volunteered to fight with the French against the Spanish. During his fighting, he was taken prisoner, but soon released. He then went back to France. In France he achieved a specialty in military fortification and explosives, which made the czar very proud. The talents of Abraham would benefit Russia’s army. Unfortunately two years late, on January 28, 1725, Peter the Great died.
Soon after the czar died, problems arose for Abraham. The court intrigues sent him to Kazan and later to the Chinese frontier. Abraham was put in charge of fortifications in those areas. During the time he spent in his placement, Abraham dealt with hardships. He was there against his will with a poor salary. He argued with the courts to be let back into St. Petersburg. He finally was allowed to return in 1730, when the daughter of Peter the Great, Empress Anna Ivanovna took the throne. She made Abraham the captain of military engineering.
After 1931, Abraham continued his position as leader on the fortifications in Baltic region, which was during his second marriage. He toured around Russia, speaking from his expertise in the fields of engineering and mathematics. He put all of his ideas and knowledge in a book he wrote in 1726, but for some reason it was not published. His career continued to flourish with his promotion in 1752; as Major-General and became in charge of all military engineering in Russia. Because of his work in the Baltic regions, Russia gained a naval stronghold there, which helped the Russians defense against the Germans in World War Two.
