During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Marius Petipa, a Frenchman, emerged as one of Russia's most influential choreographers. Working at the Imperial Ballet School as the chief choreographer, he set out to perfect the full-length ballet. Set to the music of Russian composer Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky, Petipa choreographed two of his best known works The Sleeping Beauty in 1890 and Swan Lake, which he choreographed along side Russian great, Lev Ivanov.
