Between the years 1859 and 1860, the Marinsky Theater was built. The Marinsky was named after the wife of Alexander II. the Marinsky Theater was built in Theater Square, the musical center of St. Petersburg. Throughout the course of the 1800s and the early 1900s, the theater has been renovated and rebuilt various times by different architects and for different reasons. When it was built the first time, people said that it was the most "magnificent" theater that was ever built in Russia. After it's first year of business, it began hosting such large venues that there was not enough seating for the large number of people that were attending. Architect Victor Shreter was hired to fix the problem. He renovated the building twice during the last 20 years of the 1800s. The next time the building had to be remodeled was after it was bombed during World War II. Finally, during the 1960s, the Marinsky Theater was remodeled once more to add a smaller stage and extra rehearsal space to the already existing structure. The Marinsky Theater that stands today is now a cultural and historic landmark.
