The bolshoi Theater in Moscow plays host to some of the most renowned ballets, operas, and theater productions in the world. Past members of the theater's ballet company have been Rudolf Nureyev and Galina Sergeyevna Ulanova and the corps de ballet is extremely talented as well. The history of the Bolshoi Theater has been horrible; plagued with fire. The structure was first built during the 1800s when it was commissioned to be built by Catherine the Great. The first fire that destroyed the building ocurred in 1805. It was after this first disaster that the Bolshoi fell under ownership of the Soviet Union. The building was rebuilt in 1824 and was much larger than the original. Once more in 1853, the Bolshoi caught on fire, completely ruining the interior. It was redone again three years later. The new Bolshoi Theater has enough seating for over 2,000 people and is extravagantly decorated. It is considered to be one of the world's largest theaters.
