The construction of Arts Square, formerly known as Mikhailovskaia Square, took place over the course of 21 years, from 1819 to 1840. The square and its surrounding buildings were designed by Carlo Rossi.

Arts Square was renovated between 1946 and 1948. During this renovation a public garden was added to the square. The focal point of the square is a monument to Pushkin. This statue was erected in 1957.

The buildings designed by Rossi surrounding Arts Square include the Mikhailovskii Theater (now called the Malyi Theater of Opera and Ballet), the Assembly of the Nobility (now the Philharmonic Society), No. 3 Arts Square, No. 4 Arts Square, No. 5 Arts Square, the Commandants Office, the Museum of Ethnology, as well as the Engineer's Castle and the Russian Museum. The Russian Museum is the centerpiece of Arts Square. Not designed by Rossi, but still on Arts Square is the Brodsky Museum. The Church of the Spilt Blood is located just off Arts Square.

Arts Square is connected to Nevsky Prospect via Mikhail Street.
