The Catherine Palace

The Catherine Palace was originally built for Catherine I, but many other members of the Imperial family have added to it. Elizabeth Petrovna spent excessive amounts of money to renovate and redecorate the palace, and it was she who gave the palace its name, after her mother, Catherine I. Catherine the Great also spent a great deal of money on the palace, but she was more systematic about it. To Catherine the Great, Tsarskoe Selo and the Catherine Palace were trophies of Russia's greatness. It was Catherine who employed the mysterious Charles Cameron to build apartments in the palace that were more in tune with her style.
