Vasilyevsky Island

Vasilyevsky Island is the largest of many islands in St. Petersburg.
Roughly triangular in shape it is bordered by the Gulf of Finland in
the West, the Little Neva River to the North, and the Great Neva
River to the South. The Eastern region of the Island, where the
Neva River is divided, is known as the Strelka, or the Spit. It was
here that Peter the Great intended to place the center of his government.
Peter had grand plans for Vasilyevsky Island, but they were mostly
unrealized. The center of St. Petersburg eventually developed on the
mainland, across the Neva from Vasilyevsky Island, but a number of
historic sites were built in the Strelka region of the island as well
as on the southern bank. The western region of Vasilyevsky Island
supported various industries as well as a large working class population.
