St. Isaac's Cathedral: Behind the Building
The colossal monument of St. Isaac’s Cathedral in historic St.
Petersburg, Russia, like many buildings within the city, began on a much
smaller scale. Peter the Great commissioned the first chapel in the name
of St. Isaac of Dalmatia. It was a small wooden building located in the
woods near the Admiralty building. A series of events led to the church
being torn down multiple times and the current building being built on
a scale infinitely more grand than the original building.
