Student Activists for Global Equity (SAGE):
FTAA Solidarity Action

The Story

In solidarity with actions against the FTAA meetings in Quito, SAGE members held an action on campus outside of Hepburn (which houses the economics department). SAGE compiled info on the FTAA.
The following e-mail was sent to the SLU campus explaining the action:

HEPBURN DEMONSTRATION TODAY!

The Free TRADE Area of the Americas, FTAA, promises to exacerbate environmental destruction and worsen socioeconomic conditions for the poor and working-class throughout the entire Western Hemisphere, disproportionately impacting women and people-of-color. This concerns 800 million people.

As representatives from 34 nations congregate in Quito, Ecuador this weekend to discuss the implementation of the FTAA, the SAGE (Student Activists for Global Equity) Coalition will be holding a demonstration outside Hepburn all day (Friday, November 1st) to raise awareness of this agreement around the St. Lawrence community. Please join us.

The neoliberal free market ideology is perpetuated through Economics departments across the country, including institutions like St. Lawrence. Our demands include diversifying the academic perspectives of ECON professors at this school as well as opening ECON courses to non-majors. Ultimately, our goal is to put an end to the socially disastrous policies such as FTAA that compromise the ability of millions of people to achieve a decent standard of living and fulfill their basic needs.
