Crimes and Misdemeanors

Woody Allen challenges one of film's greatest truisms: that crime doesn't pay. The film tells two separate stories, that of a successful opthamologist who murders his mistress and that of a struggling documentary filmmaker who refuses to betray his principles. The stories come together at the end of the movie, when the two characters briefly meet and the audience is left to question whether film reality can ever be real. In spite of its serious existential subject matter, the film also contains many brilliantly funny scenes, most notably Allen's documentary about his brother-in-law (Alan Alda), a wealthy television producer.
