| ABSTRACT: Modern Calculus allows us to determine areas and volumes of figures using integration. By examining ancient texts we can see that ancient mathematicians, primarily Archimedes, were also able to determine the area and volume of different figures by using the "method of exhaustion." This talk will explain the method of exhaustion, the manner in which it was employed by Archimedes, and its relationship to the modern definite integral. |
