My visit with the Madrid-Waddington Elementary School
Computer Lab
It was a pleasure to be invited to the Madrid-Waddington Elementary School for a visit to the Computer Lab.  I found my visit to be very rewarding and enjoyable.       I had the opportunity to visit with the Lab Instructor Mrs. Miller. Some of the things that the students had learned are as follows; File Server (Long in - log off), MS word (create doc.), Save and Retrieve (file server account), Front Page (create 1 webpage with an internal and an external link), Power Point (create presentation with 3 slides), and keyboarding skills (The emphasis is on technique however students are encouraged to improve their accuracy and speed.)    There were three separate sessions with twenty-one students.  It was obvious that these students had great enthusiasm and were anxious to learn. There was a great relationship of communication between the students and the instructor.        I had the opportunity to view some of the wonderful web pages that the students had created.  Some of the topics of the presentations included were: Rabbits, Dogs, and Horses. These WebPages contained explanations on how to take care of the pets.  Other WebPages were: Motorcycles with a listing of some safety rules; Cars with a brief description of each type of vehicle.  Trucks,  Harry Potter, and a Dedication to Sept. 11th.  One student started an advertising page for the family business.  All of these pages contained photos and/or a movie clip.
Questions for the students and their response:
Question:  How do you feel about the computer in general?
Response:  They answered that they loved it. They do not have access to email in school, however they like using email at home to contact family or friends that do not live nearby.
Question:  Do you use the computer for other course assignments?
Response: Yes, they use it for typing assignments and the net helps them research and gather information to use for classroom projects and homework.
Question:  What do you think your working career will be and do you think you'll need to use a computer?
Response: Some of the career choices were computer, nursing, teaching and biology; students stated that they would be using the computer.
At the end of the day I had the opportunity to visit with the Lab Instructor, Mrs. Miller and she commented on how eager the students are to learn beginning computer applications.  This is evident in the progress each class is making utilizing their computer skills.
I have chosen some photos and hope you enjoy them
