The Cyborg Discourse - Conclusion
In addition to the body of the argument, is the continued use of Olalguiaga's "Crystal Palace" as a metaphor for the cyborg - the eventual transcendence of the organic by technology. Of interest, and in conjunction with Kevin Warwick, is the projected consequence of pleasure. As noted by Celeste Olalquiaga, the "fear" dictated by the "Crystal Palace" is due to the sacrifice of the organic to technology. Nevertheless, to apply the metaphor to the cyborg discourse is to connote the eventual emergence of the cyborg as reality, as compared to representation within the science fiction genre.
However, the cyborg, from a postmodern perspective, is representative of a discourse that allows for a merger of the technological "participants" and the "mute," in the sense that the collapse of the boundaries provides for the cyborg discourse. The collapse of the "participants" and the "mute" is necessary in order portray the cyborg as a response to cultural inadequacy. The cyborg functions as a symbolic representation of a "future" discourse, while remaining contemporary. In the sense that science, technology, and medicine, allow for pleasure and enjoyment within the discourse, thus engaging the cyborg as a fundamental element that serves as an antithesis to cultural inadequacy. Nevertheless, the representation of the cyborg as an element that combats cultural inadequacy, subsequently serves as a liaison between the "participants" and the "mute." The act of the cyborg as a liaison is in order to provide a "direct" link to the Information Age - thereby counteracting those who would remain disengaged.
