Towers of Power -- a global hierarchy of cities form 'command and control centers' -- housing the headquarters of multinational corporations. These corporate towers are photographed from angles that accentuate abstractly (without specifics) the power wielded by the businesses they house. These images recur throughout corporate advertising because they anchor corporate conceptions of how the world has become ordered. These images have been lifted from commercials for First Union Bank, Boeing, NY Life, Nasdaq, Compaq, Cabletron, MCI Worldcom, Siemens, and United Airlines. A quick review of this list suggests that the companies themselves may be less durable than their imagery.
