Tracking the signifierIn our first example, the signifier = a written formula for velocity. While the signifier is the image of the formula, its signified is the meaning of the physics formula for calculating velocity. For the sake of simplicity, let's say that its first-order signified is "physics." But now suppose we radically cut this Sign out of its physics context and use it as a second-order-signifier of the spandex-body-look ("physique") which might be an outcome of serious aerobics workouts. Now, according to Barthes, at the level of myth, the signified of the second-order signifier is "physique" and taken together this yields the Sign of "Reebok." |
