Barbara Tewksbury '73
to be awarded Honorary Degree
from
St. Lawrence
Three distinguished graduates and the late President Emeritus
Frank P. Piskor will be honored at St. Lawrence University's
Commencement, to be held on Sunday, May 21, at 10 a.m. Three
alumni will be awarded honorary degrees: Reverend Richard S. Gilbert
'58, actor Viggo Mortensen '80, and Barbara J. Tewksbury '73.
A 1973 graduate of St. Lawrence University, Tewksbury received
her master's degree in 1978 and her Ph.D. in 1981 from the University
of Colorado. She has been a member of the faculty at Hamilton
College since 1978. She is currently the William R. Kenan Chair
of Geology. Tewksbury was previously the Stephen Harper Kirner
Professor of Geology from 1991 to 2004 and from 1987 to 1992
and from 1996 to 2004 she was Chair of the Geology Department at
Hamilton College.
She has received numerous awards and accolades.
- Named the 1997 New York State Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
- The 2003 recipient of the National Association of
Geoscience Teachers' Neil Miner Award for exceptional contributions to
the stimulation of interest in the earth sciences.
- Received several Dwight D. Eisenhower Title IIA awards from
the New York State Education Department to co-sponsor week-long summer
in-service training
- In 2002, her introductory course on Geology and Development in
Modern Africa was one of four recognized nationally by the American
Association of Colleges and Universities SENCER Program.
- In 2001 she was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of America
- From 1994 to 2001 she was a Distinguished Speaker for the
National Association of Geoscience Teachers national speakers program
She has a long history of service.
- Tewksbury has served on many committees within American
Geological Institute, Geological Society of America, and National
Association of Geoscience Teachers
- Has held numerous elected positions with national organizations

- 1999-2002 Elected member-at-large, Council of the Geological Society of America
- 2002-2003 President-elect for the American Geological Institute
- 2003-2004 President of the American Geological Institute
- 2004-2005 President, National Association of Geoscience Teachers
- From 1992 to 1993 she was a member of the Advisory Board of Project Kaleidoscope
- From 1998 to 2001 she served on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Geoscience Education
She has been sought after often to be an invited speaker at
colleges, scientific organizations, and for high school teachers and
students often to speak on course design, teaching techniques, and new
discoveries and research in various areas of geology.
Some examples:
- She has been a keynote speaker for many workshops over the years
focusing on teaching and course design. Many of these were funded
by the NSF and/or sponsored by NAGT.
- She gave the keynote address at the 2004 and 2005 SENCER Summer
Institute, San Jose, California: Designing a SENCER Course: Don't Just
Beat it to Fit and Paint it to Match
- She has been a keynote speaker for workshops on innovative
teaching techniques at the Annual National Meeting of the American
Geophysical Union and at the Annual National Meeting of the
Geological Society of America.
- In 1997, Tewksbury was a speaker for a workshop on the underlying
influence of geology on human events at the annual meeting of the New
York State Geological Association
With numerous geological and educational publications, she also
authored "The art of kiltmaking: step-by-step instructions for making a
traditional Scottish kilt" (May 2001)
