Alice Quackenbush It is with a sad heart we pass along the news that Alice Lu Quackenbush, Geolgy Department Secretary for 26 years died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital at the age of 72. She went above and beyond her duties as such and in 2007 she was recognized by the alumni as a W. T. Elberty, Jr. Medal recipient. Statement from President Fox . At SLUGAC 7 a tree will be dedicated in Alice's memory on the St. Lawrence Campus.

SLU Geology Alumni announce fellowship in honor of J. Mark Erickson

At the alumni gathering at GSA in Houston on October 5th, 2008, we caught Mark off guard with a card and the announcement of the creation of the J. Mark Erickson Fellowship for Geology.

Barbara Tewksbury '73 is part of a team that has won the 2009 Science Prize for Online Resources in Education sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and Science magazine. David Wald '84 appeared on CNN's The Situation Room and was quoted in various AP reports after the earthquake in Haiti on January 12th. He was also quoted in a March 1st Wall Street Journal Articls "Why Bigger Quakes Sow Less Damage." His quotes were picke dup on the wires an appeared in multiple articles [1,2] about the Earthquake in Chile. David appeared on the NBC Nightly News on March 6th. Watch at msnbc.com

Derrick Pitts '78 named to TheGrio's list of the 100 Black History-Makers in the Making. SLU Press release MSNBC Cosmic Log On February 1st, Derrick appeared on Countdown with Keith Olbermann to talk about the space program. His comments start 1:34 in to the clip

Ben Meade '06 has earned the Graduate Student Paper Award from the American Association of Geographers' Geomorphology Specialty Group. The award was presented at the national meeting of the American Association of Geographers, March 22-27, in Las Vegas, Nevada for his paper, "Spatial Extent, Timing and Causes of Channel Incision: Black Vermillion Watershed, NE Kansas."

Jeff Chiarenzelli '81 received the J. Calvin Keene Award from St. Lawrence University at Convocation on August 26, 2009. "The Keene Award was established in 1975 and is given to a faculty member in recognition of 'high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching and moral concern.'" SLU Press release

David B Hisz '99 receives and Outstanding Student Paper Award from the American Geophysical Union for a paper entitled Hydromechanical responses in dipping fractured mudstones at NAWC site, West Trenton NJ. presented at the 2008 Fall Meeting of AGU. David is currently working on a Ph.D. at Clemson University. Announced in Eos vol 90 number 18 page 159
