It is with a sad heart we pass along the news that  Alice Lu Quackenbush  died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital at the age of 72. Alice was the Geology Department Secretary for over 20 years.  She went above and beyond her duties as such and in 2007 she was recognized by the alumni as a W. T. Elberty, Jr. Medal recipient. David Mosher '10 and Sean Regan '10 are both 2009 University Fellows for this summer SLU Geology Alumni announce fellowship in honor of J. Mark Erickson At the alumni gathering at GSA in Houston on October 5th, 2008, we caught Mark off guard with a card and the announcement of the creation of the J. Mark Erickson Fellowship for Geology.  This fellowship will benefit future geology students and preserve Mark's legacy of undergraduate research in geology at St. Lawrence University.  If you wish to make a contribution to the fund indicate that you wish your donation to be earmarked for the "J. Andrew Fountain '75 was named Outstanding Oregon Scientist for 2008 by the Oregon Academy of Science Added October 13, 2009 Derrick Pitts '78 was one of only three non-NASA guests invited to the White House "star party" on the South Lawn on October 7. Read More at the SLU press release Added July 24, 2009 Ben Meade '06 has earned the Graduate Student Paper Award from the American Association of Geographers' Geomorphology Specialty Group. The award was presented at the national meeting of the American Association of Geographers, March 22-27, in Las Vegas, Nevada for his paper, "Spatial Extent, Timing and Causes of Channel Incision: Black Vermillion Watershed, NE Kansas." Added August 28, 2009 Updated September 11, 2009 Jeff Chiarenzelli '81 received the J. Calvin Keene Award from St. Lawrence University at Convocation on August 26, 2009.  "The Keene Award was established in 1975 and is given to a faculty member in recognition of 'high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching and moral concern.'" SLU Press release Added May 11, 2009 David B Hisz '99 receives and Outstanding Student Paper Award from the American Geophysical Union for a paper entitled  Hydromechanical responses in dipping fractured mudstones at NAWC site, West Trenton NJ. presented at the 2008 Fall Meeting of AGU.  David is currently working on a Ph.D. at Clemson University.
