Support for biology student research

There is a cost to conducting almost every research project. There are expenses for reagents, tubes, containers, travel, organisms, microscope slides, computer software, DNA sequencing, radio collars, etc. There are also hidden costs such as shipping charges for items that are purchased. Consequently, it is important to consider the cost of your project while you are designing your research plan. Your faculty mentor will help you to refine your research project so that it is within our budgetary constraints. Money to pay for the costs of SYE research can be obtained from a variety of sources that are described below:

The Dean of Academic Affairs and The Biology Department: The Dean of Academic Affairs generously funds up to $600 of student project budgets when money is available. Additional funds can be requested from the Biology Department to supplement the Dean's support. Support from the Dean and Biology Department are both provided on a first come first serve basis. To request support from the Dean and/or the Biology Department, students should submit a proposal using the Form to Request Research Funds in collaboration with a faculty mentor.
SLU Fellowships: SLU Fellowships support student-faculty collaborative research for 8 or 10 weeks during the summer. SLU Fellowships provide a stipend of $3,500, on campus housing, and up to $250 for project expenses. SLU Fellowships are awarded by the Scholarship, Fellowship & Grants Committee at St. Lawrence University and administered through the Academic Dean's Office. Applications for SLU Fellowships are submitted in March and usually students are notified of the award by the middle of April. Obtaining a SLU Fellowship is a competitive process and only exceptional proposals are awarded support. Students who are awarded SLU fellowships must submit either a final report or project summary to the Academic Dean's Office and present their research as a talk or poster at the Honors Reception during Family Weekend.
International Travel and Research Grants: The St. Lawrence University Center for International and Intercultural Studies provides support for a variety of activities involving off campus travel and research, including Travel Enrichment Grants, Travel Research Grants, and CIIS Fellows Program.

The Crowell Award: The Crowell Award supports off-campus study in field biology during the summer by Biology major(s) showing promise in Natural History (ecology, environmental science, population biology, or systematics). Dr. Kenneth L. Crowell and his wife, Marnie, established this award to recognize the energetic manner with which Robert L. Crowell, former head of Thomas Y. Crowell Publishing Company, combined his interest in art and literature with a love of the outdoors and dedicated action as a conservationist. The Crowell Award is administered by the Biology Department. To apply for the Crowell Award, students must submit an application consisting of 1) a statement of long-term goals, 2) an unofficial SLU transcript, 3) a description of summer plans, including financial arrangements, and 4) present plans for graduate study and career goals. Applications should be submitted NO LATER THAN April 17th to the Department Secretary, Rosemary Taylor.
