John taught in the department from 1965 until 1989. He was the department's botanist and ecologist for those many years. He still helps maintain the Green Conservancy behind Bewkes Hall, where he has planted a biodiverse selection of trees and shrubs. John and his wife Janet still reside in Canton. John visits the department regularly and continues his study of nature.
