Simulation of the Ripley Toll Station

Arena 7.0 software was used to model the Ripley Toll Station on the New York State Thruway. This software is used to simulate queues and collect data such as average queue length, waiting time and processing time. The model was used to examine the effect that EZ-Pass, tandem booths, and the number of lanes have on the traffic system. Computer results were compared with the results found using theoretical equations.

Investigation of Ranges in the Uniform and Exponential Distributions

Advisor: Nancy Boynton (boynton@fredonia.edu)

My honors thesis has been in the area of mathematical statistics and more specifically looking at multivariate probability distributions and functions of random variables. I derived the distribution of the range using order statistics for the uniform and exponential distributions. I then compared the theoretical distributions with data generated from simulations using the Minitab software. By doing this, I am able to compare the theoretical distributions with data from simulations. I used Fathom to make graphical comparisons.

This project modeled workflow in a small business using ARENA 7 software. The business was also modeled using queuing theory and Jackson networks. Similar results were obtained both ways. Backlogs and delays were noted. The mean time required to complete a job was estimated. The results were compared to the actual business being modeled.
