The Chemistry Curriculum

Chemistry is linked to a large number of related disciplines: atmospheric science, biochemistry, pharmacology, geology, psychology, oceanography, ecology, business, and law.  The broad range of careers that require a background in chemistry include research (industrial, academic, or government laboratories), teaching, medical professions (including dental and veterinary), patent law, science writing, library science, and chemical sales.

It is extremely important that those considering a major or minor in chemistry enroll in an appropriate chemistry course during their first year.  Students interested in chemistry can elect from the following courses of study:

Chemistry Major
Biochemistry Major
Chemistry Major with American Chemical Society Certification
Environmental Studies / Chemistry Combined Major
3+2 Engineering Program - Chemical Engineering Major

Laboratory and critical thinking skills culminate in chemical research projects.  Students are encouraged to participate in paid summer research experiences with chemistry faculty.  Additionally, chemistry majors undertake a senior project that includes opportunities for supervised research, writing and speaking about chemistry, and a regular seminar program.

Required courses - Math 135-136 is required of all chemistry majors. One year of physics is required of all chemistry majors 103-104 or 151-152 for Plan 2. Note that the calculus and physics courses are prerequisites for physical chemistry 341-342 which is typically a third-year chemistry sequence.

Chemical Research - All chemistry majors complete a senior research project in collaboration with a chemistry faculty memeber.  Additionally, majors are strongly encouraged to participate in paid summer research experiences either at St. Lawrence or at another college or university.

A minor in chemistry entails completion of a minimum of 6 units:103-104 (or 105 Accel. Gen. Chem.), 221-222 and two additional electives.
