A Special Message To Prospective Students From the Department Chair - Dr. Tom Budd

Welcome to the SLU Biology department homepage. We have made every effort to ensure that the information here is accurate and timely. Let me tell you a bit about who we are as a department. There are 12 faculty in our department. If you come here, you will have the opportunity to get to know all of us. Realistically, however, you will probably not take courses from all of us, but you will get to know some of us very well. We try to create a thriving, learning community in the department with a real sense of camaraderie. We like to teach people rather than classes and make efforts to keep classes small. Our field-oriented courses rarely have more than 14 students in them. By the way, about half of our courses are field courses. We also have plenty of inside lab courses where you can learn to use an electron microscope or to clone and sequence DNA. We basically do it all with about 35 different courses on the books.

If you are the kind of student who wants to get by with as much learning as possible and take full advantage of what we have to offer you, I strongly encourage you to apply to St. Lawrence. Come visit us and look around in our labs. I would be glad to speak to you personally. On the other hand, if you're the kind of student that wants to get by with as little as possible, perhaps college should wait for a while as you figure out what you really want to do with your life. We are looking for students who really want to learn in a friendly, personal environment. That's who we are, because we also like to learn in such an environment. Yes, we're still learning and you can have the opportunity to participate in our research programs and learn with us.

So, take some time to search through our pages. If you have specific questions that are not covered here, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to provide the information that you need. For the many of you that intend to pursue a health career, please visit the Academic and Career Planing Page section - Interested in Health Careers.

Enjoy and good surfing:
