Careers in Biology

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A BIOLOGY MAJOR?

Your imagination is your only limit, however, if you need a little help in seeing the possibilites check out some of the biology related professional societies. Students who graduate with a Biology major work in a variety of areas, such as industry, research, government, education, and health care. Graduate work is usually necessary for those wishing to pursue careers in the biological sciences, although many majors do obtain positions after graduation from St. Lawrence without further formal training (see-Interested in Just Getting a Job After Graduation). If you are interested in a career that involves research in subjects, including ecology, evolution, molecular biology, entomology, marine biology, physiology, microbiology and genetics, then you will probably need to attend graduate school enrolling in either a masters or doctoral program (see Interested in Graduate School). If you are interested in a health career, such as veterinary medicine, medicine, dentistry or physical therapy, then you will need to go on to the appropriate health professional school (see-Interested in Health Careers). Students interested in a health career should consult a member of the Health Careers Committee early in their college career.
